The scene of the crime Empty
PostSubject: The scene of the crime   The scene of the crime I_icon_minitimeTue Nov 04, 2014 3:50 am

Souma Kimura glanced around, earbuds in as he approached the playground. The playground was mostly empty, most likely due to the police tape surrounding one section of it. A set of monkey bars overlooking an adjacent sandbox. Souma stepped cautiously over the tape, pressing it down a little, doing a small hop to get his other leg over. He held his laptop bag close as he did so.

Once he was in the crime scene, he glanced around. No cops were here presently. Another examiner had already done a sweep and they were about to take the tape down but Souma wanted to take a look at it first... just to satisfy his own curiosity.

He walked over to the area of the crime, and gave it a casual glance.

In the moment of that glance however, he pressed play on his phone, and then he froze everything. The music, carefully sped up to a rate he could enjoy while working, began. All in all, the song was about a second long, but it sounded normal to him right now.

His eyes slid around, darting imperceptibly to the outside eye but moving almost tediously slow for Souma as he began checking out the scene.

That wasn't someone that looked liked they should be inside of police tape, especially in a playground. Was he just messing around? Miyako was finishing up an enormous sundae, her wish to go out and sketch interesting things finally finding something of note. Under her arm was a satchel filled with no less than three of her sketchbooks and pads, as well as her special pencils and other essentials needed for such work.

She had an assignment due soon and well using Hibiki and Regalia for the piece would be nice, but she'd get so much teasing during peer review! Aaah, it'd be best to just find something or someone else to sketch. Had been her driving thought behind this trek.

The man was just standing there, so Miyako moved to the swing nearby and set her bag down before pulling out her sketchpad and a basic pencil for the moment to get the idea down. She could put in details after she got the basic lay of things done... The man's position, how he stood, where the police tape lay in conjunction with how far back he was from it...

Souma spent a bit of time looking at each police marker, hoping something would pop out to him. The other examiner had already gone over the area and things seemed pretty clear cut, but something seemed off... By the sandbox, really... Time sped up and his song came immediately to an end as he moved to squat next to the box, the next song on shuffle already playing as time slowed to a crawl. He looked around the sand focusing on... what was he ... Ahh... Really....

Time sped up and Souma, still unaware of the girl who was observing him, crouched down and began digging away at the sand with his hands, like some sort of dog. He just knew what he was looking for was down here...

Miyako got what she needed but had taken the extra precaution of memorizing a bit more of the details in her head just in case. Still it wouldn't hurt to stay longer and get more details down before he left fully so the young woman slipped from her swing and moved a bit closer as he dug through the sandbox... Now THIS was more interesting by far!

She flipped to a new page, quickly sketching his basic outline of how he was crouching and the way his hands were digging. The details of his clothes and headphones and other such items either on the previous page or in her memory now, so she instead focused on attempting to capture his hurried actions and convey that sort of feel to her work.

Whatever he was doing looked fun and she suppressed a giggle as she peered over her pad a few times, pencil flying across paper.

He kept digging till he hit the blue tarp at the bottom. Yes. The blue tarp at the bottom of EVERY sandbox... and if he pulled it up... Okay, it would take... more sand to pull it out. He sighed and pulled out his scooter keys and stabbed them into the tarp, tugging at it to make a hole that he could get his hands into and rip more at. Once he did, he gave an immediate and vocal "HAH!" Freshly upturned dirt. If he just... he dug at it some more and pulled out a box. "Holy hell." He stood up, dusting his hands off on his coat and reaching into his bag to look for his camera when he glanced up and noticed.

"Uhhh..." Was... Was that girl sketching him? "H...Hi.." He said, waving awkwardly to her.

Maybe if she moved closer, she could capture what he was doing really? The man was searching for things... But what things?

Apparently whatever he had found after pulling something from his pocket! A box? His eyes glanced up, green meeting gray as she finally wondered if he was the reason behind the crime scene being a crime scene...and if she should start...running...

Any fears she had were banished at the awkward wave and hello. She brought the sketchpad up to her mouth and nose, covering the lower half of her face as she hid a smile, though didn't hide the laughter in her eyes.. Her fingers waved lightly against the sketchpad in a fellow awkward greeting. "Hi... are you supposed to be doing that?"

Might as well ask this immediately, even if she should be minding her own business... but she wondered even so after spending so much time drawing him what was going on.

Was he..? Oh! Oh, she didn't... He wasn't, yeah. Of course she'd think that. He nodded calmly, before halting things to think a moment. Uhhh... Could he.. just pull the badge out? But what if she thought he was pulling a gun out... He could have her get the badge? No, that was way more creepy... Wait, didn't he have a security ID from work? Time started again and he gave a sheepish smile.

"Yeah, I'm forensics, with the police. My name is Souma Kimura." He said, reaching into his pants pocket, he pulled out a wallet and dug through it to find his security ID that he almost forgot he had sometimes. The security guard at work knew everyone by face so IDs were sort of unnecessary unless he was sick. He held it, along with his driver's license (classed for a scooter, mind you) out for her to investigate if she wanted.

"I just wanted to do a sweep of the crime scene after someone else checked it. Make sure they didn't miss anything. I found something neat actually." The girl couldn't be any older than junior high. Why was she wandering around this park by herself?

Sheepish smile and calm nod lended themselves to his credibility, unless he was someone who was good at lying. Miyako wasn't the best judge of those things so she hoped for the best, though she was a bit tense as he spoke.

There was an immediate flash of almost disbelief in her bright eyes before he reached into his pocket and dug through a wallet. It looked like an adult enough wallet and she stepped forward to accept both the license and security ID. His name and face and quite a few other details were memorized by her in case she would have to report this though from her uneducated eyes it seemed legitimate... Handing them back with a small relieved smile, she lowered the sketchpad from her face finally. "Ah, sorry about that. I'm Miyako Inoue, I go to the nearby art academy. You um looked interesting so I wanted to sketch you for an assignment. Is that okay, Kimura-san?"

It'd be rude to say she thought he was a high school student, but her eyes shone as she leaned and peered around him. "...What kind of neat thing? Is it classified?"

She couldn't resist that though, he'd tell her off if she was being too nosy she felt but... a weird box? He was just begging for her to ask about it with that wording!

He was glad she had stuck around to see the ID. Once he'd put it away and she seemed to trust him, he calmly reached into his coat and pulled out his badge. "See?" He held it out for her to take and investigate. People in TV shows always said these could be bought at a costume shop, but there's a reason they cost almost 6000 yen to replace. They were clearly not a cheap item.

"I.. Looked interesting?" He blinked and stared blankly back at her. "I see." He had gotten a number of comments on his appearance. Interesting wasn't high on the list. It happened about as frequently as him being referred to so formally. Y'know... never.

"Ahh.. Yeah.. Well. No. Not technically." Technically it wasn't evidence till he reported it since he wasn't on the investigation personally. "Uhh... It.. It'll be fine." He said turning and picking up the box, bringing it back over. He knew he couldn't let her walk around inside the tape for now though. "There was a drug deal here the other night. Some officers busted it but they took off before the officer could get a positive ID on either of them. We know for sure one of the guys we got was the buyer, but I'm not so sure the man we arrested was the dealer." The officer had seemed sure but Souma was less sure about him...

"Well, I came back to check out the scene because we also never found the drugs that were being sold. Well.. I noticed some specks of dirt in the sandbox that looked different from the dirt around the box. As it turns out, the dealer had buried this box underneath the blue tarp thing." He looked over the box before very carefully popping the latch open.

"Aaand yup. About as much crystal methamphetamine as the other guy we caught had the money to buy." This was definitely the drugs from their case, which meant the dealer's fingerprints would be on it somewhere. Then they could tell for sure if they had the right guy or not.

"I may have...thought you were a high school student...messing with a crime scene. It was definitely something interesting to draw?" Her eyes darted to the badge as she took it, unsure of what to do with it as the young woman felt sheepish for her assumption. It was definitely something she assumed was a police badge, it sure was heftier than she'd imagined they'd be.

Holding the badge for now since Kimura had moved around to grab the box, her eyes focused on that despite the few glances up at his face to make sure he knew she was still paying attention to his words. A drug deal so close? That wasn't good at all, it was a fairly large city but this was a kids park! She frowned, unhappy with those thoughts but nodded in time with his words. So he had felt something was up?

Miyako politely let him finish and then squeaked as he popped the latch, hopping back a bit on reflex in case there was something dangerous inside. What she heard was inside though brought her closer once again, peering up and around the hands holding the box from a safe distance. "Crystal...meth? That stuff's really bad... I'm really glad you found it and not...not the dealer. Thank you Kimura-san for your hard work! That's pretty amazing how you found it then when they all missed it."

He was kind of amazing, that was really cool how he'd found the drugs! She bowed with a smile on her face, the air almost filled with sparkles. Another real live hero!

"Ah!" A... A high schooler? She thought... he was a high schooler? But... But... his badge.. his coat... he.. he looked his age! He absolutely looked his age! Plenty of people told him that, which was... odd in retrospect... Oh god... did he really look like a high schooler? Should he grow a beard? No.. Let's not go crazy here.

"Uh.. Yeah.. It's... pretty bad..." She had no idea how common these sort of things were. The only thing that really made this case noteworthy was that the officer lost sight of the dealer and they weren't sure they had the right guy. "And.. Ahh.. Th-thank you. It's nothing really. It's... just that I had nothing better to do, that's all." Well... That and he could tell the difference between dirt and sand because he wasn't stupid, but he often found praise to be humbling, as contradictory as that sounded.

"I-I am sorry for my mistake, Kimura-san. Y-You are carrying a laptop bag too..." The police officer's surprised response caused Miyako's eyes to widen and her hands to wave, trying to explain but probably making it worse. He probably felt as annoyed as she did when people mistook him... She added more things to it in hopes it helped... "A-And I was far away! That must have made it harder to tell!"

Reassure the poor man who looked like a teenager! She was now straightened up and gave him another bright, sparkle filled smile. "Welcome! It's always really nice to meet heroes. Especially really nice heroes, who explain things. Ah, here will you sign my sketch?"

She flipped the page with him standing there down, it was more complete of the two sketches, and held out the pad and pencil with a sweet smile.

He gave her a reassuring smile, though it was half hearted. He was busy sinking into the true depths of despair. He... He really must look like a teenager. She was trying so insistently to convince him that he didn't. Even he knew that meant he totally must. Uggh.. His liiife. "It's okay." He said, smiling a little at last when she did. There were so many sparkles, he couldn't stay SAD.

"O-Oh. I'm not.. I mean... Uh... " He glanced at the sketch, "W-wow... It's... It's great." He said, absentmindedly taking the pencil. He had been prepared to insist he was no hero and that his signature wasn't worth much, but with such a great sketch... He quickly signed it before frowning. "Wait... I was only standing like this for... maybe a moment." Hardly long enough to even qualify as 'standing there' really. It had been more akin to 'a hesitant step'. "You can sketch that fast? That's unbelievable." He asked. It was his turn to be amazed.

Oh good he thought he was looking his age! Miyako gave a relieved smile, accepting his own smile as that of the truth once he'd said it was okay. It seemed he was fine then!

"Aah, thank you! Really thank you..." He'd not only signed it, he'd called it great! She brought the hand with the badge up as she looked away a bit, holding it back out for him to take as she kept it up so she could get her sketchpad back. "Here you go too, Kimura-san. Can't forget this! U-Um..."

"I kept...sketching after you moved." Miyako was blushing now, not willing to not admit things as she fidgeted in place. This wouldn't be the finished product but she was definitely really fast with a pencil... She'd have to be pretty fast to capture playful kittens! Regalia had so many sketches in here it wasn't even a joke anymore...

"It's nothing." He said with another smile, noticing he hadn't taken his badge back. He took it back and traded her her sketchbook, pocketing the badge. He didn't need to lose it again. They were, as he'd noted before, not cheap. "Ah.. Thanks!" Jeez, she was sweet. Why was she wandering around a park by herself again?

"W-what? But... That sketch... looks perfect... Your memory must really be stupendous." He was still flustered from her praise, but some praise was owed her way too. Unlike his, it was deserved. That was some talent she had. "When you get to high school, I'd say join an art club, but I'm not sure they have a good enough one. You could honestly do sketches for the police." Really, she must have some kind of photographic memory.

Miyako accepted her sketchpad back with a smile and then flipped it closed before sliding the pencil through the rings in it to keep it safe for now. Her bag was back over by the swing set, but no one had stopped yet. "Welcome! U-Um, thank you. I-Its pretty...good..."

She was in the middle of trying to form a humble reply when he continued on, causing an overt and instant reaction.

"...I...am in high school. I'm graduating from the fine arts...academy... in the spring..." Miyako froze with a smile on her face, all fluster over his compliments forgotten as utter horror came over her. Did she really look like a junior high girl!? These stupid pigtails! But she loved them too much to ever lose them entirely... Sketches for the police...a good enough art club...

She was almost 18 darn it!

"Ah.. You're.. Ahhhh.." She was ... in high school? Graduating in spring? She was almost OUT of high school? "Ahhh. I'm sorry, I'm sorry." He waved his hands quickly before just... stopping things for a second. Oh god. Oh god he felt so bad. Of course she wasn't a junior high kid. Not when she could draw like that. But those pigtails... and she was just so sweet. Ahhh, he felt like such a jerk! Souma spent a moment moping before things returned to normal speed for him, his hands still waving.

"It's... It's just you're... um... kind of short. Yes. I feel so bad, though, Miss..." Crap! Crap! He never got her name! Uhhhhhh.... Wait, just leave it off at miss, stupid! "R-really though, now that I'm talking to you up close it's obvious you're in high school. Silly me." He chuckled nervously, still feeling bad about such a faux-paux.

"Its okay... I thought you were a high schooler so I think we are even then?" Miyako unfroze at all the apologies before giving him a sheepish smile, reaching up to tug on her pigtail as was her nervous habit. She decided maybe it'd be fine and instead of letting her hand drop, she tugged out the pigtail on the side she had messed with before the other followed. Patting her hair down, she gave a sigh and then a braver smile.

"Does this help? Please be honest! And you can call me Miyako, I'm fine with that Kimura-san." She knew he was reacting just as she had earlier and ended up giving him a closed eyed and bright smile. "Its fine, its fiiine. I promise I was only horrified like... a few seconds I promise! You didn't treat me like a kid so I'm not upset at all!"

She got treated like a kid because she was the newest to the whole spiritual thing. Hmph...

"Ah.. Y-yeah.. I suppose." He returned her sheepish grin with an uneasy one of his own. Hm? What was she doing now. The second her pigtails had dropped, there was a... dramatic difference in her appearance. "Ahh...Y...Yeah. You look... MUCH older, actually.." By her judgement of his own appearance, he figured she probably looked older than him now. "Well.. It's... nice to meet you, Miyako. and please, call me Souma." He said, putting a hand out to shake hers.

"And I'm glad I didn't upset you um.. for.. too long... You really don't look like a kid." Not now at least. Geez, those pigtails took the years off her. She should remember that for when she hit middle age.

"Really?" Miyako looked up, her eyes unable to see her own head and face but attempting to anyways as she finished settling her hair. "That much older? Huh..."

She continued to attempt to see, turning a little bit each way as if it would help, her insane curiosity over the supposed changes making her wonder really how much it had. She paused, mid looking up to glance over at the officer and smile brightly again. "A-Ah. Souma it is then. It's nice to meet you too."

Her free hand went out to shake his firmly, used to having to shake hands due to school and exhibits...

Her smile got much warmer as Souma said that, happier than ever now as she hugged the sketchpad to her chest with both arms. "Thank you! I worry about that so it feels nice to hear someone say it."

"Y-yeah..." He nodded, before she... she... was trying to look at herself. No.. No... Don't do that... He wanted to just... find her a mirror. She was like a puppy trying to catch its tail... you can't see your own head, silly Miyako... He shook her hand with a happy smile, surprised a little at her grip.

"That's silly. You shouldn't worry what people think of you, especially something like that... I mean, you don't look like a kid and whatever you look like you should be happy with anyways." Even if you looked like a high schooler when you were out of college.. He clutched his laptop bag tightly to his side, wondering if he was overstepping his bounds trying to give her such a pick-me-up speech.

"Well... My boyfriend is about your age so he probably looks a little creepy when I go around with my hair up like that, if you thought I wasn't a high schooler. Haaaha... This isn't the Sailor Moon show." Miyako reached up to tug a pigtail, forgetting that she had in fact just taken them out and missing. She just slapped herself in her head with her hand, wincing slightly but ignoring the action with a tiny blush. She's seen the man's age and birth date when she'd held his cards so it wasn't a big mystery.

"I'd be fine if I didn't have that worry! I just wouldn't want him to look bad, so its not really silly... or is it?" Tilting her head, she wondered if the man knew how much his words did help as she smiled. She did feel a little better and Miyako realized that she would follow his speech if she didn't have that worry. "Thank you... That did help a bit actually, Souma."

"Hmmm..." Her boyfriend was his age? Jeez... He didn't know if that was impressive for her or questionable about him... He supposed it wasn't the age gap itself so much as when the gap was. She was in high school... and he... could drink in most countries. Well, if it worked for them. He wasn't sure he could do that in her boyfriend's shoes....

although the self slapstick was adorable in its own ways... He repressed a laugh, smiling a little and looking down.

"Mmm. I'm sure he's happy with you in public so it's a little silly? I haven't met him, but I can't imagine he's too self conscious about being seen with you." It was true. She was nice and even with the pigtails, if he was dating her, he was probably anything but embarrassed to be seen with her.

"Hmm?" Miyako was used to people thinking lots and not saying things and her head tilted just a bit, wondering what Souma was currently hmming over in response to her words. At least he had enjoyed her little goof up, but the laughter did cause a hint of red on her cheeks.

"Mm, I guess. Could be annoying if someone bothered us over it though, I'll be eighteen in a little bit so its not like its a big deal? And...you are right. He really wouldn't care what anyone else thought, not at all... Hahahaha." Her laugh was sheepish, Hibiki was well known for the little amount of fucks he could give at any given time when not in reference to her feelings or thoughts. "Thanks! I needed that reminder. I'll still be a little wary, since he won't, just so he doesn't get any hassles."

"Ah... Y-yeah, I suppose that would be annoying... " He wanted to say that they should just ignore people who annoy them like that, but he of all people had no room to talk, sensitive to the opinions of others himself...

"And oh, I mean... I didn't even mean it was like a... legal issue or anything. Besides, it's only a legal issue if-" HAHA NOPE, NOT EVEN GOING TO BROACH THAT SUBJECT, JUST WALK AWAY, BRAIN "Yeah, that's super kind of you to worry about him. He's lucky!" Souma smiled. He was a bit envious of the bond it seemed the two of them shared, but he was happy they had it.
