Suki walked happily down the sidewalk of a main street with her woven hand basket in hand just coming out of the store. She wore a simple summer dress with a ketchup stain and plastic sandals, holding a carrot steady in her mouth with her right hand. She looked like she was really enjoying the carrot, way more so than what should be normally for a kid.

Her parents had told her to accept some responsibility and to better appreciate how much the family could buy on their budget. Shopping was that task, but Suki found it easy to follow the list of the things that she had to get, and got her usual free treat from the baker: a large piece of rye bread.

She didn't know that there was a young man that had been following here since she entered the city. Nobody in the city paid any attention to him as he looked like a drifter and had unremarkable features. He did, however, look her in a way that could unsettle someone with an eye for that sort of trouble.

'Raspberry cake...the cake shop sells slices of those...right?' Now that work was finished, Muika made her way through the city streets. She'd wanted to pick up a few things before heading home though, these things mostly being a last minute thought she'd had before work had ended.

Her hand moved to play with her hair, which she wore down today rather than her usual style of keeping it tied. She kept it tied during work, since if there were hollows it could get in the way when she had to fight but once off she'd decided to take the hair string out immediately rather than waiting to get home.

Today had actually gone rather well, no hollows to deal with and her work had been rather easy to get done. She'd had a good night's sleep beforehand as well. Things had been going rather well, lately and she was happy it was so...even if she'd have trouble admitting that aloud or letting that happiness show in her expression. Though, one part of her, a very small part deep down within her felt that today was just going a bit too well...

"Aaaah~!" she exclaimed, with the carrot still in her mouth. Drool fell down her mouth, adding a stain to her dress.

Suki's eyes lit up when she saw the cake store as she ran up to the display window, accidentely bumping into Muika. She placed her grubby drool fingers on the display glass, with the basket from the market now at her elbow. "Sugoi-eeee" As she made the e's, her grin grew wider. She loved the cakes and sweets on display because of how they looked more than anything else. There was one strawberry wedding cake that she always loved to see in the display window.

The man that was watching her was now on the other side of the street. He discreetly put his index finger to his ear and whispered something. It was to confirm that his target, Suki, was making regular trips only gathering the essentials, resisting the impulse to buy any sweets, and having regular unwashed stains on her clothes. Most likely this was an orphan gatherer that was part of a bigger group.

Muika was pulled from her thoughts as she felt something bump into her, causing her to automatically mutter a small 'sorry' on instinct. Looking down she saw a child, who seemed to now be distracted by the cake display. She continued towards the door, going about her business as she'd planned.

Mostly, she browsed the sliced pieces. There were all sorts of different kinds, certain kinds she'd definitely never tasted before. She'd come here for a specific one though, for a gift...even if it wasn't for any special occasion or anything...

It was normal to do that right? Right.

As soon as Muika left the side of the young girl, the man that was watching Suki took the window of opportunity to snatch the girl away. He crossed the street abruptly, causing a car to honk at him. Slinking beside her, he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and started to direct her away from the window.

Suki's eyes widened in surprise and was overwhelmed by the suddenness of the maneuver, and only managed to knock on the glass once before desperately reaching for the window with her hands. A part of the carrot she was eating went down the wrong pipe and it was hard to make noise.

It was only when they were in a nearby alleyway that Suki vomited the carrot piece. A bloodcurdling scream resounded before the man could gag her mouth, and now he was on the run. Nobody would catch him though, certainly not the cops.

As she was browsing the cakes, about to pick out the piece she wanted she noticed something out of the corner of her eye, hearing a small knock on the glass. The only thing she noticed before that was the retreating figure of a taller person.

Something didn't feel right, her nerves screaming at her to figure out what exactly. Standing, she gave one last glance at the cakes before exiting the shop. She could come back later...

Looking at the window, she noticed the hand prints that had belonged to that girl who'd gotten distracted by the display but they seemed...swiped? The prints left behind looking as if they'd been slid off in a quick motion before leaving the glass, at this, her eyes narrowed some before looking at the figure who seemed to have picked up pace in their retreat.

Muika chose to follow, remaining a safe distance but keep up as the person shifted to move into an alleyway after some time which only raised her suspicion. It was then, when she was closer she heard the short scream before it was promptly come off. Her eyes widening, she quickened her pace to peek behind the corner of the alley to see the figure now retreating in a sprint.

She followed, grabbing a discarded pipe near one of the dumpsters. Her movements quiet but fast, she used her ability which increased her speed; causing her to appear behind the man in a flash; in that moment, she swung the pipe with enough force to knock him down and possibly out before making a grab for the child to move her out of the way of the man in case he toppled.

Suki threw away the cloth gag from her mouth. Before only drool ran down her face, but now tears and drool coalesced in her open mouth, a concoction of an unabashedly shameful display.

"Mummo, mummoooo!" she cried, as she backpedaled on her back into an alley wall, rejecting Muika hold's on her after Muika had moved her out of the way of the path of the falling man. The lady had just been the stranger she had looked at the cake display with, and now she was holding a pipe and the man who had tried to snatch her away was bleeding on concrete.

It all happened so fast. She wanted her mommy and daddy; she wanted to go home. Then she remembered the woven basket, and saw that the man had crushed it when he had started his very brief sprint down the alleyway. Suki also felt a bit weird, though she didn't know why. It was her childish naivety, and her ability to mask what she tasted. The gag had been dipped in chloroform. She didn't even realize that her scraped knees stained the bottom of her dress so that it looked like two running eyes.

Closing her eyes, she tried to close herself from the world, and tried to imagine and make real a taste that could destroy her previous memory, but all she could think about was how the man had wrapped his arm around her shoulder, like a snake, and how easily it had almost been that he had taken her away. She brought it upon herself to make her parents hate her enough to go shopping. They knew this would happen. She cried for them regardless, and hoped for their mercy and take her back.

Muika released the child when she was out of the man's way, letting her gain her mobility back and run if she wanted to...in fact it'd probably be best. The girl stayed though, unable to move as she began crying.

She glanced down at the pipe, noticing the blood on it before discarding it in the nearby dumpster. The man was bleeding but it wasn't like he hadn't had it coming. Before moving to check the child, she went to check the unconscious man. He was alive, she could tell by the movement of his back. A marking caught her eye though, one on the upside of his hand...

So he was one of them.

He was too big for her to move somewhere, he'd wake up eventually...she needed to get the kid away from here. First things first though, see if she's alright and all.

Muika carefully approached the crying child, moving to squat down to be more on level with her as she pulled some clean napkins she'd had from lunch from her pocket before speaking softly. "I...I'm sorry that had to happen...and sorry if the whole...pipe thing scared you. I acted without thinking first." She tried to explain...feeling a bit awkward as she wasn't good at comforting others, children included. "Here, some napkins. It's...It'll be okay now, the bad man's not gonna try to take you anywhere anymore."

"You got...scratched up a little. I can help you clean up if you want, I'm good with injuries." If the kid left them as they were the small scratches could get dirty and possibly infected...they needed to be cleaned; at least clean them up with some water until she could get better care.

When Suki first heard the voice, she tried shuffling back more, but when no touch came, she seemed to relax a little. Her parents tended to grab her whenever she did wrong, and force her to look at them.

She still didn't know why the man wanted to take her away, but the woman did not seemed to care even when she checked for vitals after bludgeoning the man with a pipe. There was no mistaking it; the man was a rotten apple, and for a moment she was safe. The woman's apology was awkward though. Suki knew that when adults thought they were talking to a child, they spoke differently, and she was crying. Still awkward though, which meant that the woman didn't seem all that used to talking like this, and that it was genuine concern.

Suki pulled up the dress and looked at the scrapes on her knees; since the blood had settled her 'injury' didn't seem all that bad. She wouldn't be able to tell the truth with her parents. She could also still the ghost presence of the man's hands when he had grabbed her shoulders. She hated it, and wanted it to go away soon.

"You don't have to say you're sorry... you saved me." she said. She wanted avoid conversation of her small cuts and bruises on her hands that partially cushioned her fall. Anything to divert her attention from the wounds would make the wounds at least feel a bit better. She didn't know what else to say that could ease the tension in this case, so she tried small talk in a bit more cheerful voice. "My name is Suki. What's your name?"

"It's Muika." She replied, "Ah...do you have a normal place you stay...or do you just wander around? If you do I could take you there...If I'm around you won't have to worry about something like that happening again."

She was automatically assuming the child was an orphan, as she'd been alone and had been a target of Bell's Viper...so they'd assumed she was an orphan as well. Some had regular places they took shelter in if they lived out here on the streets...Still, this girl was rather well kept and dressed for an orphan...it was strange.

"I know that whole thing was scary so..." It looked like she was trying to ignore the scrapes she'd received which...wasn't good. Perhaps if they left this area and the shock of the situation quelled some she'd be more willing to let them be taken care of.

"My mommy and daddy don't live far from here. They told me that I should be more thankful for what I have. I've been shopping for a while. I always buy what's on the list and that's it. I don't understand..." why a man wanted to take me away.

Suki was a bit confused over why Muika asked that question about where she lived, since she was a child, but she glossed over it since she did say her name and was cautious in what she said.

"It was scary, and I think we should go somewhere else!" she wholeheartedly agreed. "Mom and Dad won't believe me but it doesn't matter. I'll just have to make it so that they'll never send me out alone again. I'll have to do something really bad though. It would be no good if another bad apple comes and you're not around to save me again."

"Adults have lives, yes they do." she hoisted her arms up so that Muika could grab and hoist her to her feet. Suki was again trying to avoid conversation about the incident. "I can't wait to be an adult."

"You're not an orphan?" Muika asked, though with Suki's words it was rather obvious now...

How had they made that mistake? Thinking back, the man that'd tried to grab Suki had looked young...he couldn't be over twenty-three at most...Had he messed up? This girl had been shopping alone so it seemed like a mistake that one new to scouting would make.

"You were alone...so he assumed you were an orphan." Muika tried to explain, but obviously not explain too much. Suki was a child...there was no need to fill her with such frightening imagery. The fact that someone had already tried to grab her was already too much.

Letting out a small breath Muika stood, and when Suki held out her arms she helped the girl to her feet before offering her own hand for the girl to take. If the girl were to take it, Muika would lead her away from the alley and to the park where both could take a seat at one of the stone lunch tables near a water fountain and pond.

It was much nicer there, much more calming and pleasant. Ducks could be seen in the distance swimming in the pond while other people went about their own visits in the park throughout their day.

An orphan?! she thought, as she accepted Muika's hand in being hoisted up. Suki squeezed it contently as they walked hand in hand to the park. Along the way she thought more about possible reasons why the man thought that she was an orphan.

"Well, maybe he could have thought that I was an orphan 'cause of what I wear. My parents don't like to do my laundry. Ora ora!" Suki pointed to the ketchup stain on her dress strap. "That was from a hot dog I ate three days ago." She sounded a lot more prideful than she should be about it, as though the stain was a badge of honor.

Suki then noticed the ducks too and pointed at them excitedly. She definitely felt more at peace at the park and in not being alone in the city.

"Possibly." Muika answered, "That and the fact you were alone probably caused them to think you were one. Pulling out one of the napkins, she also produced a pen from her pocket and began drawing. What she drew was the symbol of the group, the one that was seared into the flesh of it's members and subjects; that being a snake wrapped around a blue-bell flower. "If you ever notice a mark like this on any guy like that that tries to approach you, run. You might not always see it but if you do, then you need to get away no matter what."

She wasn't sure of if anyone else managed to get out when she made her own escape but to be on the safe side, it was best to avoid people with visible marks like this all together. "If you don't then...they'll give you a mark like it too and it hurts."

"S-sorry..." She apologized, realizing that maybe this subject could be avoided...she was simply trying to warn the girl but she accidentally might just be scaring her. "I didn't mean for any of that to frighten you, I just wanted you to know so you know what to avoid..."

Something nice to focus on...something nice...

"It's better here right? Lot's of nicer things to look at...like the ducks." She added, once Suki pointed out the ducks swimming in the pond nearby."They're c-cute."

Suki looked at the napkin curiously as she drew; she liked drawings, but she didn't think she was that good at it yet. It was a pretty and interesting picture, until she was told of what it was. Her eyes widened. She was scared again, but chose not to ask questions and continue indulging in the diversion.

"Have you ever had roasted duck before? Its really good. Though it's nice to have some in the park just to watch them swim and be happy."

She paused and frowned; nope, the diversion wasn't working. "I don't understand why they would want to take orphans. What about the police?"

"I haven't...I'm not a very good cook so Iyu- ah...well my f-friend handles the cooking at home." It felt a bit...odd to use the...normal terms, especially to a child, still and mentioning Iyuki as if the girl would know him wasn't right either so...friend was the easiest term she could think of. "He cooks a lot of different things though so maybe one day it'll be something I'll try."

She glanced back at the ducks again, noticing some smaller ducklings swimming around what was presumably the mother before turning her attention back to the girl.

"Mm, it is nice to just watch them." She continued, though at Suki's next question she had to think...try to explain to the girl without making things too scary. "Well, with orphans...if they're just wandering the streets no one would report them missing. No one would...miss them if they just happened to vanish. Those people stick close to the dark so...they always make sure to stay away from a policeman's sight."

"How terrible... I thought there were enough orphanages to house them and then have them move in with loving families. I mean, sometimes I don't like Mommy and Daddy and sometimes they say mean things but they don't mean it and they alway say they're sorry and I think everybody should have parents to know what it's like..."

She was wiping the tears from her eyes; the image of the mother duck leading her ducklings around only made the reality clearer that parental love and guidance was very, very important. Suki also envied Muika for having a friend cook for her. Her parents cooked, but it just wasn't the same. Their goal was to simply feed her, not make it fun or something to bond over.

"Have you told the policeman? I mean, people say that eventually the law wins. If they knew about the tattoo and who their targets are, maybe they'd have more patrols 'cause orphans might only not be missed 'cause people don't know about them. If more people did know, they would care. I know they would care. I care."

"Sometimes...to a kid, the thought of an orphanage can be scary." Muika replied, more or less speaking from personal experience. "They get scared of being taken somewhere they don't want to be...even if that's a risk on the streets. They try to stay away from it..."

If she recalled where the base was...perhaps she would have told the police. Without that info though she had little evidence to prove she was telling the truth. When she'd escaped she just run...she hadn't cared what direction she went in just as long as it'd been away from there so she didn't exactly have a map to follow and it was near impossible to trace her steps.

"I would have...if I remembered where they stay." She replied, "If I can't prove that then I don't really think a policeman would believe me..."

"That sounds silly, to think that an orphanage can be scary, but then again all I have seen is the outside. I mean, depending on the movie where you see those places, they can be seen as good or bad, but then again they're only movies. I wonder what makes them think the street is better. It must be really sad not having a place to call home..."

Suki tilted her head and wondered about the last thing Muika said about the location. They had a location but she forgot? How did she find the place the first time? There was another thing too that Muika said that her childish view of the world couldn't accept.

"The policeman listens to good people though. What if..." Suki chewed at her lower lip in contemplation. "I let them take me, take me to where they are, and the police can follow and bust them?"

She really didn't know the seriousness of her plan in endangering her life. Most of the time, she knew, she only thought about herself. That unpleasant feeling, however, wasn't deserved for any child, and she could help end it.

Muika averted her eyes, looking off to the side as Suki talked about orphanages. The girl wasn't necessarily wrong though back then, everything had been scary for Muika so even being taken away to an orphanage had seemed frightening to her and she'd thought the worst. Not that the girl knew that and not that she needed to know.

She was shocked from her thoughts at Suki's suggestion, her eyes having widened and the fear obvious on her face. "A-Absolutely not. Something like that, it's too dangerous. One wrong move and things would get bad, too bad. Trust me on this...Please."

Her words had come out in a rush, not yelling but her pitch slightly higher out of urgency. She'd censored herself though, despite her shock. She wanted to get her point across on how dangerous it was without using words like 'killed' or something equally as frightening...her only hope was that the girl would trust her on this.

When her suggestion was shot down by Muika, Suki's first expression was anger, but the anger was quickly overturned by the sudden sadness of it all. She was frustrated that she couldn't do something for a cause she suddenly believed in. She closed her eyes and made the roof of her mouth taste like cherry pie, licking it with her mouth closed to prevent herself from grumbling. Muika was an adult, but she cared for her.

"I trust you, I always will!" Suki pleaded. "It's just that there has to be something I can do." She pressed her lips. "I know I'm just a child, but you'll see. When I'm an adult, I'll start my own orphanage. No orphan will find it scary and I'll make the most delicious things for them. I'll find them good homes and protect them from the snake men."

"But what about in between, when I'm still a kid? Will you protect them, Muika? I know you have an adult life and you have a super awesome friend that cooks for you, and I don't want to ask more than what you've already done, but I..."

She stopped suddenly, and turned back to looking at the pond, eager to keep holding onto Muika's hand.

This girl trusted her? Always trust her?

Muika was confused, but she didn't let it show in her expression, instead letting out a breath of relief when the girl yielded on her idea. "That's good, when you're older you can do that. You can make it as happy a place as you want it to be. I'm sure kids would love that."

As for in between...

"For now, just be a kid. Enjoy your life and be thankful you have what you do, I guess." She answered. "It may be awhile but, one day you'll be able to make a lot of children really happy. As for me...If I can find that place again, if I'm able to find it...I'll be sure to let the police know. Those children still have a chance. I won't stop looking, not until I find it and then I'll make sure they all get out of there."

That's what she wanted to do anyway...there was no guarantee all of them could make it...some might have grown too accustomed to how things work there...used to the experiments, used to the fighting...some of them were probably already gone and broken by now...but that didn't mean all of them were. Some may still have a chance and that was the most important thing.

She questioned her desire for revenge nowadays but...this had nothing to do with that...

It wasn't a matter of revenge here...it was a matter of not giving up...

And giving up wasn't something she planned on doing.

"Thank you, Muika."

Suki knew Muika would do her best to find that place, and continue saving other children. She didn't know if she could ever be happy again, but time had a strange thing of numbing terror. The ghost hand of the man that wanted to take her had been lifted, at least for a time.

"The park was really nice but if I don't come home soon my parents will really worry about me. Take me home?"

Suki actually didn't believe that with a full heart, however. Her parents, when they were angry at her, didn't seem to care where she was at any given time. It could be hours in the late afternoon before they would really start to notice. She also needed to think of what to say to her parents when she got home; lying might be for the best so they wouldn't have to worry.

"Sure, I'll take you home." Muika replied, giving a small nod. Moving from her seat she stood and walked around the table to Suki's side and offered her hand, obviously though the girl would need to point her in the right direction.

The girl's parents probably were worried about her. Muika didn't know the girl's exact age but she seemed too young...in her opinion anyway to be walking around all alone in the busy city. Even if she had been shopping and handling a chore the city could be dangerous for a kid if they were alone...

Suki waved goodbye to the duckies before racing around the table to grab Muika's hand. Her grip was firm and earnest as she waved Muika's arm back and forth while walking back home. She pointed at what she considered interesting along the way to the path of her house, markers so that she couldn't get lost. She knew her community pretty well this way. While walking, she was sucking on one side of her cheek, making it taste like toffee. However, the wheels continued to turn as she walked about what Muika had said.

"Say, how did you find the bad men's place the first time? I mean, even if you don't remember where it is, maybe doing the same thing can help you find it again?"

She had no idea she was equivocating a simple procedure of finding, say, a lost toy, to something much more complex.
